Desert Landscaping Ideas
![]() |
The desert is a place of mystery and beauty. If you live in a desert area, there are various desert landscaping ideas to help you make your outdoor areas more welcoming and attractive. The trick is to know what plants thrive in the extreme desert conditions. Of course, there is the cactus. You will find a staggering variety of cactus plants available. There are some that bloom and some that do not. Blooming cactus plants are great for adding a splash of color while retaining the hardiness that cacti are known for. Of course, cacti aren't the only thing that can be grown in a desert area.
There are plenty of other gorgeous plants that can be effectively grown in a desert landscape. They include Purple Sage, Red Bird of Paradise, Oleander, Bougainvillea, Lantana, Pampas Grass and Fairy Duster. If you are not familiar with these plants, head to your local garden center and ask a knowledgeable employee to point them out. Purple sage, also called salvia, is a beautiful evergreen shrub that is a perennial. Red Bird of Paradise is also a perennial shrub, but it has vibrant blossoms in shades of red, yellow and orange. Then there's Bougainvillea. This romantic flowering vine is perfect for latticework and can be trained to climb around it. Blossoms are usually red, pink or purple in color.
Oleander is a shrub that features flowering clusters in a variety of different shades. You can find white, red, pink and a peachy-pink salmon color. Oleander is beautiful but poisonous, so be sure to keep children and animals away. Lantana is another vine type plant that thrives in hot desert conditions. If you are looking for a tall decorative grass, look no further than Pampas Grass. Finally there is the Fairy Duster shrub, which bears puffy red blossoms. You will notice that most of the plants suitable for the desert are hardy perennial shrubs.
Most people want some sort of seating area in their outdoor living area. You will want to provide plenty of shade with a large umbrella over your patio area. You might also want to try placing some decorative grasses in large terra cotta containers near your seating area for some visual interest. For plenty more desert landscaping ideas, check your local library or bookstore for illustrated books on the subject of gardening in desert areas. You will learn that even the desert can be a wonderful place for an eye-catching garden!
